Data centers and power
Amazon's campus beside the Susquehanna nuclear plant is the one large campus actually being built: three buildings are done and 17 more are planned. Around it are 22 more proposals, including six filed in Archbald alone and a $10 billion QTS campus next door in Salem Township. Most are still in hearings or court.
Getting around
The Scranton to New York train would run three round trips a day in just under three hours. It is in federal planning with no start date and no construction money yet. What is certain is road work: I-81 and I-84 at Dunmore through 2031 and I-81 from Avoca to Scranton from 2029 to 2035.
Jobs and industry
Lockheed Martin plans more than 700 new jobs in Archbald and Jessup. The Scranton Army Ammunition Plant is being modernized, Tobyhanna Army Depot added a drone-motor line, and Mint-X is moving a factory from Queens to Hazleton.
Warehouses
Mericle's CrossRoads East plans 13.8 million square feet at I-81 Exit 141, next to NorthPoint's Hazleton Logistics 141. Amazon is building a delivery station near Nanticoke, and the Century Logistics Center is approved for Archbald and Mayfield.
Health care
Geisinger's nearly $900 million Wyoming Valley expansion finished its steel frame in July, with the new tower due in 2028, and its Scranton hospital is growing too. A nonprofit bought Regional, Moses Taylor and Wilkes-Barre General and kept all three open.
Downtowns
Fidelity Bank moved about 170 people into the restored Scranton Electric Building. The city approved two-way streets and a new streetscape, and a riverfront park is planned below Steamtown, near where the train would stop.

Salem Township, Luzerne County, next to the Susquehanna nuclear plant
Three buildings are finished and 17 more are planned. Amazon says construction started in October 2025, and its nuclear power contract ramps to the full 1,920 MW no later than 2032.
Amazon bought Talen Energy's data center campus beside the Susquehanna nuclear plant for $650 million in 2024 and is building it out. It is the only large campus in the region with buildings finished and more under construction.

Residents said they were locked out of a July planning vote, and a judge ordered the planning commission to hear the applications again. It votes on Sept. 24, 2026, before supervisors decide.
A developer group assembled land from about 217 owners for a third campus, and another owner wants 185 more acres added for a fourth. Both need the township to expand its data center zoning.

Allowed under Archbald's older zoning, but final land development plans are not filed yet. Valley View School District sued on Sept. 18, 2026 to put it under the borough's newer data center rules.
Corscale says it owns the site and is talking with a large tenant for seven data centers between Eynon Jermyn Road and Business Route 6.

Downtown Scranton to New York Penn Station, about 140 miles
In federal planning. PennDOT says opening by 2028 is not feasible and no timeline is known; the service plan is due in 2028 or 2029, and no construction money is committed.
PennDOT and Amtrak are planning three daily round trips between downtown Scranton and New York over the rebuilt Lackawanna Cutoff. It would be the biggest change in how the region connects to New York, but it is a plan, not a project under construction.

Modernization under way. A July 2026 Pentagon inspector general report said national shell output is well behind the Army's goal; Scranton is one of the plants covering for a stalled Texas line, and Army officials raised concerns about the contractor's maintenance and timeliness there.
The Army-owned plant, run by General Dynamics, is central to the national push to make more artillery shells.
